This is a 12-foot (3.5-meter) length of black poly (polypropylene) yarn. Click here to see all of our poly yarn colors.
Poly yarn has long been used in fly tying. Perhaps its key characteristic is its ability to stay buoyant when wet, which is why it is sometimes referred to as floating yarn. If you just wrap this stuff around a hook, however, it's not buoyant enough to float the hook on its own (we've tried).
If you're interested in using our poly yarn, we recommending investing the $4 into our oh-so-cute Yarn Comb. This yarn can get kind of matted and stuck together, and the Yarn Comb is the easiest way to separate the fibers.
To learn more about using poly yarn for fly tying, check out our very appropriately named How to Use Poly Yarn for Fly Tying page.
Because synthetic materials (like poly yarn) will degrade in the environment much, much slower than organic materials (like our wool yarns), we suggest using flies tied with synthetic materials only in places where the likelihood of losing the fly are low (e.g., a wider stream with few trees in the way of your casting).
All yarns come in our Actually Useful Packaging. Please read THE RULES before you order.
